The Edifier MR4 studio monitors offer a great all around sound at an affordable price. While they do not feature a Bluetooth option for wireless use, they have plenty of other inputs to more than make up for it in most cases.

The MR4 studio monitors from Edifier offer a great experience for budding musicians. They have a music mode and a separate monitor mode with easy to use controls. They offer a clean sound and are a much more affordable option for monitors. While they may not be ready to tackle a fully fledge professional studio, they will do nicely for a home studio and those who enjoy listening to music.

Closer Look
The Edifier MR4 studio monitors come in both black and white color schemes, offering something for everyone. They are well protected inside the box and come with just enough extras to get them up and running.
Inside the box we find the user manual, a 3.5mm cable, 3.5mm to 2x RCA jack and a bit of speaker wire to connected the two speakers together.
There is no denying that the MR4 monitors look amazing. Unliked the R1280DB bookshelf speakers we previously looked at, the volume control for the MR4 is on the front of the speaker and not the side. The volume knob can be used to adjust the volume and put turn the monitors off. You can also double click the knob to change sound modes which is pretty cool.
On the front there is also an auxiliary port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. When plugging your headphones, the MR4 should automatically switch to its monitor mode, making things as simple and plug and ply can be.
On the back of the MR4 monitors is where all the fun is. Here we have the low/high control knobs and the unbalanced and balanced inputs. We also see the left speaker out connectors with the mains lead connected next to it. Everything we need control wise is on one speaker, whether it be the front of the back.
Performance
The MR4 offer a nice sound, similar to that of the R1280DM speakers we had a look at awhile back. However, I do believe the MR4 are wasted on me as I don’t need or use the monitor feature which is, of course, one of the main selling points the MR4 have to offer.
In terms of sound, there was a tiny bit of crack when at full volume with no sound coming through. It wasn’t enough to make a big deal out of, but could definitely notice it. However, it did not seem to affect anything when sound was playing which is what really matters.
The lows were OK but I didn’t find them quite as strong as other speakers. I do try to use the same songs when testing speakers so I can tell if there is a slight difference, which I definitely feel there was. The highs were nice and clear no matter how much bass was being pumped through the speakers. All in all, the listening experience was enjoyable.
Final words
The Edifier MR4 studio monitors are a great entry point if you are truly in need on monitors and not normal speakers. They offer a nice sound across all levels of volume and are quite affordable. They come in both black and white so they shouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb no matter your setups color.
The MR4 may not have a load of different connection types, and are also missing Bluetooth but this is to be expected. They are not designed to just be everyday speakers and should be used a monitors instead. For those making proper use of them, you will be able to make use of both an unbalanced RCA connection and a balanced TRS input
Considering the current price of around £100/$100, the MR4 can be a solid investment. If you are after a pair of studio monitors to try them out, or just don’t want to sped loads of money, the MR4 is a good offering. They do what they set out to do, and at the end of the day they do sound rather nice. Decent sound, great price and backed by Edifier makes it hard to go wrong with the MR4 monitors.
