AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D laptop CPU shows strong performance in early tests

AMD is preparing to launch a new high-performance laptop processor, the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D. This powerful chip comes with 16 Zen 5 cores and 64 MB of L3 3D V-Cache, helping it run fast and smoothly. While AMD has not yet announced an exact release date, the processor is expected to arrive in the first half of 2025.
Early benchmark results look promising
Tech website Hot Hardware recently tested the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D in an MSI Raider A18HX laptop. This laptop includes up to 64 GB of RAM and NVIDIA RTX 5080 or 5090 graphics cards, making it a powerful gaming machine.
According to CPU-Z software, the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D runs at 55W, but it can go up to 75W if needed. During testing, some cores reached speeds of 5.19 GHz, while others stayed below 2 GHz when not in use.

Strong performance in benchmarks
Hot Hardware was not allowed to test games due to AMD’s rules, but they ran other performance tests like Cinebench 2024, PCMark 10, and Geekbench 6. The Ryzen 9 9955HX3D performed very well in these tests, especially in multi-core performance.
- In Cinebench 2024 multicore, it scored 2094 points, which is 20% higher than the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX.
- In Geekbench 6 and PCMark 10, it was slightly behind the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, which was faster by up to 48% in Geekbench 6.
- However, in single-core tests, the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D performed better than most other chips.
Competing with Apple’s M3 Max
One of the biggest surprises was how well the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D performed against Apple’s M3 Max processor.
- In Cinebench 2024 single-core, it scored 129 points, with only the Apple M3 Max doing slightly better.
- In Geekbench 6 single-core, it scored 3165 points, just 4 points ahead of the Apple M3 Max, which scored 3161 points.
A strong choice for gaming and work
With its mix of high single-core and multi-core speeds, the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D could be a great processor for gaming laptops. It also looks good for everyday tasks and work, an area where past X3D processors were weaker.
Once AMD officially launches the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, it could become one of the best laptop CPUs in 2025. Gamers and professionals will likely keep a close eye on this powerful new processor.
