Valve is reportedly working on new versions of its Steam Controller and VR controllers. Leaks show designs and features for these devices, hinting that mass production could start next year.
Steam Controller 2: Improved Design
The new Steam Controller, called Ibex, is an updated version of the original. The first Steam Controller, discontinued in 2019, had a unique design with trackpads instead of a regular directional pad and analog sticks. While some fans loved it, many found it difficult to use.
The Ibex fixes these issues with a design similar to the Steam Deck. It features a proper directional pad, dual analog sticks, and trackpads placed beneath the sticks. This mix of traditional and modern controls makes it more user-friendly while keeping Valve’s innovative style.
New VR Controllers: Compact and Feature-Packed
The new VR controllers, codenamed Roy, are smaller and more advanced than the Valve Index controllers. They look similar to the Meta Quest 3 controllers but include extra features like a directional pad and all face buttons on the right-hand controller.
These controllers are likely designed for Valve’s rumoured standalone VR headset, Deckard. Previous leaks suggest Deckard will use ARM chips and Linux, making it a portable and self-contained VR system.
Valve’s Hardware Comeback
The Steam Deck’s huge success has boosted interest in hardware. While a new Steam Deck is not expected soon, the Ibex and Roy controllers show that Valve is focusing on improving older products.
Both devices could appeal to gamers who enjoy innovative technology. If development continues smoothly, these products might be available in 2025, marking its return to exciting new hardware.
